A friend of mine recommended an outstanding daily reference book called My Utmost for His Highest. It is source to me for inspiration and orientation. The writer is Oswald Chambers (illus.).

There are 365 days worth of short readings, about 300 words which require just a small amount of discipline to read.  I find this one particularly inspiring.   There is material for at least a dozen sermons therein. It is dated 19th June

The service of passionate devotion

Do you love me? Feed my sheep John Chapter 21 verse 16

Jesus did not say to make converts to your way of thinking but he said to look after his sheep, to see that they get nourished in the knowledge of him. We consider what we do in the way of Christian work as service yet Jesus Christ calls service to be what we are to him not what we do for him. Discipleship is based solely on devotion to Jesus Christ, not on following a particular belief or doctrine. If anyone comes to me and does not hate …….he cannot be my Disciple Luke 14:v 26

In this verse there is no argument and no pressure from Jesus to follow him He is simply saying, in effect, if you want to be my Disciple you must be devoted solely to me. A person touched by the spirit of God suddenly says ‘now I see who Jesus is’-  that is the source of devotion.

Today we have substituted doctrinal belief for personal belief and that is why so many people are devoted to causes and so few are devoted to Jesus Christ. People do not really want to be devoted to Jesus but only the cause he started. Jesus Christ is deeply offensive to the educated mindset today, who only want him to be their friend, and who are unwilling to accept him in any other way. Our Lord’s primary obedience was to the will of his father, not to the needs of people —  the saving of people was the natural outcome of his obedience to the Father.

If I’m devoted solely to the cause of humanity, I will soon be exhausted and come to the point where my love will waiver and stumble. But if I love Jesus Christ personally and passionately I can serve humanity, even though people may treat me like a dormant. The secret of a disciple’s life is devotion to Jesus Christ, and the characteristic of that life is its seeming insignificance and its meekness. Yet it is like a grain of wheat “that falls into the ground and dies” —  it will spring up and change the entire landscape John 12 verse 24

Today I received a call from a lady who wishes to sell her house. She lives in Peasedown St. John which is slightly outside my area though I will visit for bigger jobs. I like these ‘make ready for selling’ challenges. People who buy think first of cost then of the house itself, the number of bedrooms, the aspect, the location, schools, shops, and then near the bottom of the list the garden.

It must not seem hopeless because that reflects on the way the house was treated. It needs to be ‘visible’ i.e. to enable the potential purchaser to see what they might change.  Any rubbish just introduces ‘noise’ which interferes with perception.

We arrived to find a ‘garden’ on a housing estate it cannot have been attended to for the past five years. Grass was 50cm high. There were brambles and nettles all over the place. I dont know if my petrol strimmer is enough for this. I was not sure if we both wanted to do it so I will call the lady on Wednesday.  I have a large brutal Chinese strimmer with a metal saw-type blade.  I tried to get it going but I could not get the petrol to go into the tubes. Maybe I will try with the old one.

I’m a great fan of synchronicity and it makes a huge difference to my day when such an event takes place. We had finished locking at the job and I suddenly got the idea that I should go into the Radstock Working Men’s Club and have my customary medicine of a half of Guinness and a large house whiskey with a half of cider for Francoise.

We arrived and sat at a table where a few people were talking and one of the people recognized me – I must admit before we recognized her. She was a member of the stand in the Park group and is very much a red pill person. She was with her father who was most definitely not a red pill person but they agreed to differ and loved each other nevertheless.

I was able to say some things that resonated with her; she invited us to an event on the last Wednesday of this month of June in the local Weatherspoons. Had I not followed my sudden impulse I would have missed out on this conversation and the chance of sharing with a kindred spirit.
