This is mostly going to be an image based diary entry. We decided to take advantage of the fine weather and took our local bus to Bath. We saw many coaches parked on Wellesway, the road from Radstock to Bath. We did not even consider using the park and ride because even that gets full. I have written before about this event, see previous editions of this diary, and we travelled through virtually empty streets to arrive at the bus station and then onward to the area where the Christmas Fayre was.
Maybe I have changed but all I found was a lot of stands or cabinets many with a small amount of trade being done and a lot of people wondering around with certain exceptions not buying anything. I think the lack of a carefree atmosphere must be largely due to the huge rents that are charged. I understand that for a bigger cabinet the charge is 500 pounds a day so that figure is subject to correction. It was pleasant to have a street entertainers and performers.
We took refuge in the city art gallery where there is a public exhibition going on till the 10th of January and certainly well worth of visit. See the four examples below. I found the riches of the artworks so great that I would have to return a second and a third time to do them full justice because it is just too much.
We then went to Saint Cuthbert’s Without which is a very progressive church where the seating is informal, there are settees and cafe at the back. Services are held on a regular basis. I say good for them if it brings in the public and they feel accepted and comfortable.
We returned slightly after sunset, relieved to get out of the crowds but I’m not so sure I would make it any effort to make a return visit which after the frenetic 10 weeks of creating the book is probably quite a good idea.Â
