Lyme Regis + predatory seagulls

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Today Wednesday Francoise felt strongly that she wanted to go to Lyme Regis and what a good decision that was. The weather was hot without being stifling, and the crowds were out in force. We jumped on the hourly bus from Bridport that runs along the coast and 50 minutes later we had arrived. The beach was full but actually it did not matter as everyone was in such a good mood. Francoise decided to have a swim, and why not, so I was quite happy to stand over our possessions while she did so.

THE DREADED SEAGULLS

We both decided to have an ice cream from one of the few brands we trust to be unadulterated, Marshfield I think it was. We were happily walking along the sea front when we noticed a commotion where some sea gulls were circulating round someone and stealing food. Unnoticed by us, another seagull approached from behind and grabbed the middle of a cone of the vanilla ice cream that Francoise was eating.

They were off in a flash, of course. We were in a state of mild shock but I had to admire the professionalism of these birds. They work in pairs and I believe that they figured out how to distract the attention of the victim. Shortly afterwards I saw a man opening his mouth to eat a hamburger and a seagull snatched the meat from right in front of his face. The secret of avoiding attention of seagulls is to eat under a parasol so if they see they cannot escape quickly they will not attack.

RESTAURANTS

The restaurant trade is a difficult one to maintain throughout the year. Basically the profits in the summer have to last the owners throughout the winter though if it is long wet and cold I don’t know how they manage. Some proprietors will have dumbed down in order to attract more people but this in itself could make the venue less attractive.

They have so many charges rents and rates behind the scenes combat that would put me off owning such a place. Also if you live in a fairly remote place and you need a professional engineer they often have to travel further and thus the charge is greater. I am thinking of such things as broken down washing machines or cookers. You can pay £200-£300 and more thus wiping out the day’s profits.

Back to base to enjoy a lazy evening.
